These doctoral training grants are to allow students to achieve a formal qualifications, most often a PhD. The amount of money involved in the grant may differ depending on the necessary costs, but is always agreed upon in advance. The funds can be used for most aspects involved in gaining a research qualification, including research costs, travel costs, stipend, etc. The funds are provided by a Research Council, directly to a Research Organisation.
The research these funds are used for must meet the standards for ethics and best practices and are therefore subject to a slew of guidelines and regulations. Furthermore, the students must be selected in accordance with Education (Fees and Awards) Regulations 1997 and subsequent amendments, or the similar regulations for Scotland. In addition, the student must be a graduate student pursuing a research qualitifaction such as a PhD.
