The Kildare STEM (Science, Technology, Science and Technology) scholarship is a points-based award. It was established by NUI Maynooth, Kildare County Council and Industry in Kildare. Second level schools are fundamental to the success of the programme, which seeks to promote science, technology, engineering and maths at undergraduate level. The scholarship covers the entire programme by offering €2,500 on a yearly basis. Students must be enrolled in selected subjects at the National University of Ireland Maynooth. A housing reservation is also offered to students selected for the award, but the normal costs for these facilities apply.
Only students who are residents or have attended a second level school in the Kildare County area are eligible to apply. Applicants must have achieved 525 LC points, or two As in LC higher level papers in mathematics, along with any of the subjects selected as part of the scheme. They must also be enrolled in selected subjects for the first year of their undergraduate degree at the university.
