General Description

Ghent University has a Special Research Fund for Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from Developing Countries. The University awards PhD scholarships to promising candidates from developing countries who wish to conduct half of their PhD research at Ghent University and the other half in a university in a developing country. These grants take the form of a “sandwich” scholarship whereby the candidate works alternately on a research project between Ghent University and a university in a developing country, spending 24 months in total in a span of 4 years in each location. The beneficiary will receive a monthly allowance while at Ghent. No funding is provided while at the other university. There is no subject restriction in the field of research. However, subjects related to development in developing countries are preferred. The scholarship provides a monthly stipend of approximately €1.830. The Ghent University promoter also receives a bench fee of €15.440 to defray operational costs, and travelling costs.

Requirements

Candidates should be a national of a developing country. Candidates must have a University of Ghent professor committed to acting as supervisor before applying. Candidates must apply jointly with a promoter of Ghent University. Candidates must commit to at least 2 research stays in Ghent. Candidates must have a guarantee that he or she can work on a PhD project at a partner university in a developing country.
